Voici un court texte en anglais de vulgarisation scientifique. Donnez-lui un titre en français, que vous pouvez dicter à l’aide de votre enregistreur vocal.
Palm oil is a vegetable oil extracted from oil palm trees. It is the most consumed oil in the world, especially in the food industry. Although this oil has many advantages – it is easy to grow and gives a smooth texture to liquids without changing their taste, etc.- it also has many disadvantages.
The cultivation of palm oil leads to deforestation, pollution and a decrease in biodiversity. According to the NGO Amnesty International, some plantations are directly linked to multiple labor abuses. Moreover, many studies showed that the consumption of palm oil is very unhealthy and can lead to serious medical conditions. Palm oil is a thorny issue and has been at the heart of the controversy for several years now. Many NGOs are trying to make people aware of the many problems linked to its production and consumption, while some companies are trying to make their production of palm oil more sustainable and to find alternatives to palm oil.

Since the industrial revolution, mass consumption has prevailed. However, in a world where resources are limited and where world population is expected to rise to 9.7 billion by 2050 (according to the United Nations), circular economies could be the answer. Unlike linear economies which come down to extracting, producing, consuming and throwing away; circular economies offer a model whose main concern is to reduce the waste of resources and to limit its impact on the environment.
Circular economies focus on producing, consuming and recycling. They allow better resource management while still caring about and enhancing people’s welfare. Various startups and newly founded businesses have started to follow this more ecological model, for example by offering the possibility to exchange goods such as clothes, books, furniture, and many more. Some other companies are starting to adapt their production, utilizing recyclable materials and making their products reusable, thus drastically reducing the amount of single-use plastic they use.
